Summary:
San Marcos Police Department received a call reporting an individual with active felony warrants at an
apartment complex. One of those felony warrants was issued as a result of a San Marcos Police investigation

involving an Assault Family Violence Impeding Breath or Circulation, originally reported to the San Marcos
Police Department on February 10, 2025.
The caller also reported the suspect, later identified as Thomas Anthony Hawkins III, age 25, had additional
warrants. Our 911 Dispatch Center confirmed two additional fullextradition warrants: Assault on a Peace
Officer out of Tarrant County from 2023 and Continuous Violence Against the Family out of Bell County in
2020.
Three officers arrived at the apartment complex located at 3085 State Highway 123. The involved apartment
was on the top floor.
Officers knocked and announced themselves as police. After a third attempt, the door was opened. An adult
female came out and confirmed the suspect was inside. She advised officers that there were several adults
and two children in the apartment and that two firearms — belonging to her and her partner — were also
inside.
Her partner, who is the brother of the deceased, exited the apartment shortly thereafter, holding one of the
children in his arms. After being told about the purpose of the officers being there, the brother handed the
child to the mother and returned into the apartment to bring the suspect out.
During this time, one of the three officers went downstairs and saw the suspect exit the apartment onto the
balcony near the railing. The officer told him to go back into the apartment. This officer remained on the
ground floor.
When the suspect’s brother did not immediately return from inside the apartment, an officer knocked and
announced that they were not going to go away. The door then opened, with the suspect being removed from
the apartment by his brother. The suspect was holding a knife raised near his headOne of the officers was
standing right outside the door at the top of the stairs. As the suspect lunged with the knife toward the officer,
that officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. The suspect fell to the ground face down. He
remained in possession of the knife and began to roll over, at which point the two officers discharged their
firearms multiple times.
The suspect was handcuffed and treated by San Marcos Hays County EMS. He was transported to
Ascension Seton Hospital, where after a short time he was pronounced deceased.
