Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On 05/24/2020, at about 1853 hours, the decedent was observed committing a traffic violation (no front
license plate) at about the intersection of Walzem Road and FM 78 by Deputy J. Calderon. Deputy Calderon
turned around and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle the decedent was driving; While Deputy Calderon
turned around, the decedent abandoned the vehicle he was driving (later determined to be stolen) at about
the 7500 block of FM 78 and fled from Deputy Calderon on foot. Subsequently, several Bexar County Sheriff's
Office Deputies and several Converse Police Department Officers responded to assist Deputy Calderon to
locate the decedent. As the deputies and officers attempted to locate the decedent he reappeared on the
grassy shoulder of FM 78 which was announced on the police radio. At this point, it is reported by the
deputies and officers that they observed the decedent with a firearm (.32 caliber handgun) lowered toward the
decedent's side. The deputies and officers, who were present at this point, drew their service handguns and
ordered the decedent to drop his gun. The decedent responded by saying drop your gun(s) or I''l do it and
placed the gun to the right side of his head. The deputies and officers tried to deescalate the situation
verbally, but the decedent shot himself in the head. No deputies or officers fired their weapon(s). The
deputies and officers performed life-saving measures until EMS arrived, but lifesaving efforts were
unsuccessful and the decedent was later pronounced deceased on scene.
