Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On April 8, 2025, at 1117 hours, two Bexar County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) deputies were dispatched to 8046
Wayword Trail for a welfare check. The caller advised dispatch that her husband, later identified as the
decedent, had been involved in a hit-and-run. The caller requested a welfare check be done on the decedent

and the BCSO was dispatched. The caller also informed the dispatcher there are guns in the home and
provided a description of the decedent's vehicle.
Upon arrival, one deputy stated she observed an older white male (later identified as the decedent) on the
driveway of the residence. The decedent appeared to be sitting down on something on the driveway of the
residence with the garage door open. The same deputy stated she also observed the vehicle described by
the caller parked in the driveway near the decedent. As the deputy was exiting her patrol vehicle, she
observed the decedent reaching for something, and then she observed the decedent standing up. The deputy
stated she saw the decedent extend his arm, point a black handgun at her, and fire the handgun. The deputy,
seeing the handgun pointed at her, immediately ducked and ran for cover towards the back of the patrol
vehicle. While running to the rear of the patrol vehicle, the deputy stated she heard another gunshot. The
deputy, and her partner (another deputy) took cover on the driver side of the patrol vehicle. The deputy
immediately unholstered her duty weapon and began to give verbal commands to the decedent. The deputy
attempted to see where the decedent was, but she could not see the decedent. The deputy asked her partner
deputy if he had eyes on the decedent, to which he replied yes.
The deputy then grabbed the overhead speaker microphone and began to give verbal commands, calling to
the decedent, and instructing the decedent to come out with his hands up and to put the gun down. After
several attempts to speak with the decedent, the partner deputy advised the deputy that he had eyes on the
decedent. The deputy attempted to see where the decedent was but still could not see him. The deputy then
repositioned herself to the front area of the patrol vehicle, where she observed the decedent standing near his
front door. The decedent still had a handgun in his possession. The deputy continued to give the decedent
verbal commands to put the gun down, to which the decedent then stated, “I don’t have a choice”. The deputy
told the decedent, “We do have a choice,” and the decedent then raised the handgun that he had in his right
hand and pressed it to the right side of his head. The decedent then shot himself on the right side of the head.
The deputy observed the decedent collapse to the ground (sidewalk of the residence). The deputy
immediately approached the decedent and observed a gunshot wound to the right side of the decedent's
head and blood coming from the decedent's head. The deputy slightly moved the decedent and observed the
handgun underneath the decedent's torso; the decedent was motionless. Additional responding deputies
assisted in clearing the decedent's residence and no other persons were found inside the residence. Medical
personnel were requested and arrived on scene; the decedent was pronounced dead at 1145 hours by Dr. B
Everitt.
