--- PAGE BREAK ---
San Antonio Police Officers were conducting surveillance at a location for an known wanted subject, the
decedent. The decedent had an active warrant for aggravated assault against a public servant. Undercover
detectives observed the decedent enter a vehicle as a passenger and the vehicle drove off. Uniformed
officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. A uniformed officer was able to identify two females in the front
seat of the vehicle and the decedent in the rear seat. Officers attempted to call out all the occupants. The
driver exited the vehicle and was detained, however, the decedent entered into the driver’s seat and drove
off, ramming a police vehicle in the process. The decedent then fled from police, eventually driving the wrong
way on the freeway access road. When the decedent came to the intersection of New Braunfels and the
access road to IH10, he broadsided a citizen’s vehicle. The decedent then exited the vehicle and ran on foot
from uniform officers. The officers gave chase, shouting commands for the decedent to stop. As the decedent
ran, he began to fire a handgun at the pursuing officers, striking one of the officers in the arm. A second
officer returned fire but did not strike the decedent. The decedent then fled onto the main lanes of the
interstate, continuing to fire his handgun at nearby officers. While in the roadway facing oncoming traffic, the
decedent pointed and fired his handgun at passing motorists in an attempt to gain access to a vehicle.
Additional responding officers observed this and, fearing for the safety of the public, engaged the decedent
with their service weapons. The decedent was struck several times and fell on the freeway. Officers secured
the decedent and provided medical care until the arrival of EMS. The decedent was pronounced deceased at
the scene.
