Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
Two uniformed officers assigned with the SAPD Covert Response Unit received information on the location of
a suspect (decedent) who was wanted on 4 active aggravated robbery warrants. Through surveillance,
plainclothes detectives were able to identify the decedent and observed the decedent driving towards the
incident location. The uniformed officers, each in a separate marked patrol vehicle, drove to the rear of the
apartment complex to apprehend the decedent. As the first officer arrived, the decedent was seen standing
outside and next to the decedent’s vehicle. The decedent then began walking away from the officer, while
having his left hand in his pocket. Knowing the decedent had active felony warrants, that included the use of a
firearm, the officer immediately began to give commands for the decedent to show him his hands. The
decedent removed a cell phone from his left pocket and tells the officer “No” and that he needs to make a call.
The second officer then began to give commands for the decedent to get on the ground. Continuing to
disregard the commands, the decedent turned and began to walk away from the officers while reaching into
his front right pocket for an unknown object. One officer deployed his Taser on the decedent, causing the
decedent to fall forward. As the decedent fell, he rotated his body around, pointing a firearm toward the

officers. Both officers observed the gun being pointed at them and, fearing for their safety, discharged their
firearms at the decedent. The decedent was struck multiple times. Officers began providing medical aid and
requested EMS. The decedent was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.
