On arrival officers observed DFR providing medical treatment to a male complainant and a witness stated the subject responsible was down the street hiding behind a trashcan with a gun. Officers canvassed the area and located the subject at the 5000 block of Cranfill Drive. Officers believed the subject was armed and took cover behind squad cars and gave the subject verbal commands to surrender. Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7 --- PAGE BREAK --- The subject reacted negatively to the officer’s commands and discharged a handgun multiple times in the direction of officers. Officers returned fire striking the subject. Officers waited for a ballistic shield and while using a vehicle advanced to the subject. Officers were able to handcuff the subject and called in DFR who transported the subject to Baylor hospital where he expired from his injuries. SIU, the body camera and dvr team, the DA’s office and PES responded to the scene. A handgun was recovered at the scene belonging to the subject. Body worn camera video, dash camera video, and air one video was collected and is being reviewed. A LEICA scan of the scene is being produced by PES. SIU Detectives requested a walk-through, a statement, and a blood specimen from the involved officers which was declined through their attorney. Their attorney did schedule a time for the involved officers to report to SIU to provide a statement on Tuesday, July 16th. Witness officers provided a walk through and reported to SIU and provided a written statement from the scene. The original complainant was shot in the neck by subject and transported to Baylor Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Next of kin notification was made by Detective Billings at SIU to the subjects’ mother. Custodial Death Report :: Page 7 of 7
