Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On August 20, 2017, I was notified by DPS Communications San Antonio that Trooper Michael Gutierrez had
been involved in a vehicle pursuit from Wilson County into Bexar County which ended when the two
motorcycles that were evading Trooper Gutierrez crashed their motorcycles at the intersection of IH-10 and
FM 1516. When I arrived on the location both individuals had already been transported to the hospital.
Trooper Gutierrez advised me he was parked on the side of US 181 on the north bound side when he
observed two dark colored motorcycles traveling north bound traveling 82 miles per hour in a 65 miles per
hour zone. He stated that he activated his overhead lights in an attempt to pull the motorcycles over for the
violation of speeding. Instead, the motorcycles accelerated to well over 100 MPH. He activated his siren and
the motorcycles still failed to yield. The motorcycles reached speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour while
traveling NB on US 181 towards San Antonio.
The pursuit continued NB on US 181 until it merged onto IH 37. The motorcycles then merged onto EB Loop
410. The motorcycles traveled side by side for the majority of the pursuit. One of the motorcycles would split
from the other at different exits on EB Loop 410 and then rejoin the other at the next entrance ramp. The
motorcycle that exited Loop 410 would disregard all traffic signals and signs at intersections in an attempt to
avoid apprehension. At this point, Trooper Jacob Lavender joined the pursuit and began assisting by staying
behind the motorcycle that remained on Loop 410. Trooper Gutierrez lost sight of the motorcycle that kept
exiting Loop 410 at the intersection of Houston St. and Loop 410. Trooper Lavender still had visual contact
with the motorcycle that remained on Loop 410. Both motorcycles entered I-10, traveling eastbound

approximately 1/4 mile in front of Trooper Lavender. Trooper Lavender advised Trooper Gutierrez that the
motorcycle took the FM 1516 exit and had possibly crashed. Trooper Gutierrez took the exit for FM 1516 and
observed a white male in the process of attempting to pick up a black colored motorcycle. Trooper Gutierrez
took the subject, identified as Daniel Wayne Hash, into custody. At this point, Trooper Gutierrez observed the
second motorcycle crashed on the feeder road east of FM 1516. The second male subject was identified as
Devon Michael McKnight. EMS was immediately notified to respond to the scene. Trooper Lavender provided
comfort and treatment to McKnight while Trooper Gutierrez provided comfort and treatment to Hash until EMS
arrived on the scene. At this point both male subjects were transported by EMS to San Antonio Medical
Center for medical treatment. McKnight was pronounced deceased at 1:38 a.m. at San Antonio Medical
Center.
