Medical Cause of Death:
Medical Cause of Death:
After a complete autopsy, including toxicology, histology, and review of all available investigative information,
the cause and manner of death cannot be determined with certainty.
It is possible that the cause of death is the toxic effects of a synthetic cannabinoid given that he appeared
intoxicated prior to his death and acquaintances of the decedent reported that he had a history of synthetic
cannabinoid use: although no one reported that the decedent used synthetic cannabinoids near the time of
his death and the decedent did not admit to any drug ingestion. Postmortem blood was analyzed for a
number of (but not all) synthetic cannabinoids at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences, the
University of California San Francisco, and at NMS labs, with all testing reported as negative for the presence
of the specific synthetic cannabinoids for which testing was performed: however, it is possible that the
decedent ingested a synthetic cannabinoid that was not able to be detected with the current testing performed
at those laboratories. There are a myriad of synthetic cannabinoids with the number continuing to vastly
expand as new drugs with little to no scientific data are developed by clandestine laboratories, making
detection of many of the compounds difficult or impossible at the present time. Cardiac hypertrophy,
commonly caused by hypertension, likely contributed to the cause of death. If additional information becomes
available, the cause and/or manner of death may be amended.
