Under Restraint: No Summary of Incident Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters) Summary: Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7 --- PAGE BREAK --- Officer Tyler Sauvage #1216 initiated a traffic stop on a 2016 Ford Ranger at the intersection of Westfield and Pinn Road. Both the suspect vehicle and patrol vehicle came to a stop just north of the intersection. When Officer Sauvage approached the suspect vehicle, he spoke to the driver informing him of the traffic violations committed. The driver is identified as Sammie Joe Barbosa. Also, in the vehicle were Alex Garcia in the front passenger seat and Gabriela Cordova in the rear seat of the vehicle, behind the driver. As Officer Sauvage continued the traffic stop he asked Sammie Barbosa to turn the vehicle off and put the keys on the roof of the vehicle to prevent the suspect vehicle from fleeing. Instead, Sammie Barbosa turned the vehicle off and put the keys on the dashboard. Officer Sauvage asked for identification from the passenger at which time Alex Garcia and Gabriela Cordova began fidgeting about. Alex Garcia can be heard saying "give it to me" to Gabriela Cordova. Officer Sauvage tells them to stop moving and by that time Alex Garcia had produced a handgun and pointed it at Officer Sauvage. Officer Sauvage began to raise his firearm as Alex Garcia fired several shots at Officer Sauvage, striking Officer Sauvage on his firearm, finger, and police radio. As he retreated towards his patrol car, Officer Sauvage was able to return fire towards Alex Garcia. Officer Sauvage sustained an injury to his right middle finger. Sammie Barbosa and Alex Garcia died at the scene and Gabriela Cordova received a non-life threatening injury to her torso. Custodial Death Report :: Page 7 of 7
