Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On September 3, 2016, Willie Wright was arrested for Robbery (HPD Case 113109316) and booked into the
central jail at approximately 6:06 p.m. Body Camera footage from the arresting officers show no use of force
during his arrest. At the time of booking, Wright informed the jail staff that he was a diabetic. He did not
disclose any other significant history. Wright was seen in the Jail Clinic on September 3, 2016 at 6:25 p.m.,
on September 3, 2016 at 8:45 p.m., on September 4 at 9:50 a.m., and on September 4, 2016 at 6:25 p.m.. In
addition, on September 5, 2016, Wright was assessed on the fifth floor by jail medical staff at approximately
4:25 a.m. because he was a known diabetic and refused to go to the clinic. On September 5, 2016, at
approximately 4:55 a.m., Wright was taken for pre-trial on the 5th floor by Jail Attendant Kevin Adams. Adams
observed Wright fall to the floor in distress; possibly having a seizure. Adams called for Sergeant Sanchez
and then called 911 upon his arrival as instructed. Adams and Sanchez were joined by Jail Attendant L.
Mosley, Jail Attendant D. Sanders, Jail Attendant C. Wynn, Jail Medical Specialist F. Nnamonu, and Jail
Medical Specialist C. Nnaka. Wright was evaluated, placed on a stretcher, and moved to the clinic. While
waiting for HFD, Wright became unresponsive. CPR was initiated and HFD Ambulance 9 arrived on scene at
approximately 5:06 a.m. HFD Advanced Life Support arrived at approximately 5:26 a.m. and continued efforts
to revive Wright. Transport to Ben Taub Hospital was initiated at approximately 6:08 a.m. with an arrival time
of 6:21 a.m.. Wright was pronounced deceased by the emergency room physician at 6:46 a.m. Wright did not
appear to have suffered from any trauma. During an autopsy at the Harris County Institute of Forensic
Sciences on September 6, 2016, Dr. Ross was able to determine that Wright died from a blood clot that
traveled to his lungs, likely originating in his legs. Ross stated she will have to further investigate why the clot
formed; however, she indicated it (clot) originated long before Wright was arrested. A formal medical ruling is
pending.
