Summary:
On 9/2/2026, two Wood County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were on patrol in the area of CR 3860 & 3859
attempting to locate a suspicious vehicle that had been reported to Wood County Communications. The
uniformed Deputies were operating a marked Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle when they located a passenger
car parked in the roadway. As the Deputies made contact with the two occupants of the vehicle, the Deputies
smelled burnt marijuana. The driver admitted to being in possession of marijuana and was asked to exit the
vehicle so a probable cause search could be performed. The driver exited the vehicle, but as the Deputies
prepared to search the vehicle, the driver opened the driver’s side door and retrieved a handgun that was
concealed within the vehicle. The driver raised a semi-automatic pistol at the Deputies and retreated behind
the open door. The driver yelled something to the effect of, “you better get back!” and then pointed the pistol

at one of the Deputies, forcing the Deputy to engage him. The suspect was struck and collapsed on the
roadway. The passenger of the vehicle was detained in hand restraints. The driver was transported to the
hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
