Heller was wanted out of Fayette County, Tennessee for Vehicular Homicide by Intoxication. Authorities in Tennessee had requested assistance from task force members with locating and arresting Heller on the felony arrest warrant. As the Pottsboro officer attempted to make contact with Heller during the traffic stop, Heller produced a handgun and shot himself one time while seated in driver’s seat of the Ford pickup. Officers provided immediate medical attention to Heller until paramedics arrived and transported Heller to a local hospital. Heller was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital by medical personnel. His body was sent to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. The final autopsy is pending. Texas Ranger Brad Oliver initiated a Custodial Death Investigation. Ranger Oliver processed the scene of the shooting, collected evidence and interviewed multiple officers who were on scene at the time of the shooting. Ranger Oliver reviewed the in-car video from the Pottsboro PD patrol unit, which clearly identified Heller shooting himself. Ranger Oliver also reviewed digital photographs of Heller taken by law enforcement moments after he shot himself. Said photographs showed a revolver in Heller’s right hand.
