Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On 7/20/2018, Texas DPS Bryan Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Special Agents worked with Texas
DPS Houston CID methamphetamine Initiative Group Special Agents and Houston Police Department SWAT
to execute a search warrant at 17536 Bamwood in Harris County, Texas. The search warrant execution was
based on a drug search warrant signed by a Harris County District Judge on 7/19/2018. The search warrant
was executed at approximately 7:30 a.m. Upon entry into the residence by SWAT, a person known to be
Suzanne Nicole Chaney was in her bedroom and put a pistol to her head. She said that she was going to kill
herself. SWAT halted and Ms. Chaney barricaded herself inside her bedroom. Cell phone contact was made
with Ms. Chaney by Houston PD hostage negotiators and efforts were made to have her surrender herself
without harm. She refused. Negotiations continued for several hours until ultimately Ms. Chaney became
more resistant and disconnected phone communications. At approximately 11:00 a.m., SWAT attempted to
introduce a gas irritant into the house in an effort to have her evacuate. It was at that time that Ms. Chaney
shot herself in the side of the head. She was immediately removed from the residence and life saving
measures began. She was taken to the Houston Northwest Medical Center where she eventually died. The
Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Division is in charge of the death investigation.
