Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On Monday, September 11th, 2023, McKinney dispatch received a report of an adult male walking around the
apartment complex at 703 Bumpas St, knocking on random doors, threatening to kill himself. The caller,
Lucile HARRISON advised her son, Sidney DOTSON was a “mental patient” who was off his medication
since being released from prison 3 weeks ago. She stated he had been taking drugs and threatening to kill
himself today. Officers contacted DOTSON, who was uncooperative and immediately confrontational with
officers. Officers could see DOTSON was armed with a knife and appeared to have a laceration to his neck
that needed immediate medical attention. Officers deployed a less than lethal round to gain compliance,
however it was ineffective. DOTSON immediately charged toward officers with the knife, causing them to fear
an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death. Officers discharged their department issued pistols,
striking DOTSON. DOTSON was transported to Medical Center of McKinney hospital, where he succumbed
to his injuries. An autopsy was performed on DOTSON by the Colin County Medical Examiner’s office. The
final report revealed that the medical examiner believed the cause of death was due to gunshot wounds
