Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
~~On Saturday, 09-03-2016, a twenty seven (27) year-old male identified as Richard Jeremiah Ramirez, was
fatally shot by police after a 30 mile vehicular pursuit. Cameron police officers were initially dispatched to the
residence of Richard Ramirez’ estranged wife, Cecelia Ramirez. Cecelia Ramirez told Cameron
officers that Richard Ramirez had taken a vehicle belonging to her mother without consent. Cecelia Ramirez
told Cameron officers that at the time, Richard Ramirez was armed with a short barreled shotgun and had
allegedly threatened to kill himself if Cecelia Ramirez did not give him the keys. A Cameron PD officer later
observed Richard Ramirez at a local gas station and approached him. Richard Ramirez ran to the stolen
vehicle and a pursuit ensued. Cameron PD and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officers pursued
Richard Ramirez toward Temple. During the pursuit, the Richard Ramirez called 911 and told the
communication operator to tell the police to stop chasing him or he would "shoot and kill everyone”.
Richard Ramirez entered the city limits of Temple, where DPS troopers engaged in the pursuit. Officers
attempted to block Richard Ramirez’ path as he drove through a tire shop parking lot at the
intersection of SW 25th Street & Avenue G. A Cameron PD officer rammed the passenger side of
Ramirez’ vehicle in an attempt to end the pursuit. Richard Ramirez then pointed a shotgun toward the
Cameron officer who crashed into his vehicle. DPS Troopers Rick Hernandez (.357 Sig) and Ernest
Del-Bosque (M-4 rifle w/ .223 caliber), each fired upon Richard Ramirez as did Cameron PD Officers Chris
Ashworth and Jeffrey Teasdale (both fired .45 caliber.) Richard Ramirez attempted to drive away as officers
fired upon him. Richard Ramirez’ vehicle first struck a parked utility trailer before running into the
second Cameron PD Unit. Richard Ramirez was later pronounced dead at the scene.
