Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On 1/28/2018, at approximately 10:30pm, a vehicle evaded from an Austin PD officer, after an attempted
traffic stop for a traffic violation committed at the intersection of E. Slaughter Lane and the northbound
frontage road of IH35. After the officer initiated his emergency lights to stop the vehicle, it began to evade the
officer. Due to the offense being a minor traffic violation, the officer did not engage in a pursuit of the vehicle.
Later the officer spoke over the phone with a family member of the registered owner of the vehicle. Through
that conversation, the officer received information that the vehicle, which had evaded earlier, may be in the
area of Auburn Blaze Lane, in Austin, Texas. At approximately 1:40am, an Austin PD patrol supervisor was
patrolling in this area, and discovered the vehicle that had evaded earlier in a field along side the 7900 blk of
E. William Cannon Drive. This supervisor went out on the vehicle to investigate further. As he pulled up
behind the vehicle, the decedent exited the vehicle armed with a firearm and initially pointed it at the patrol
supervisor. The patrol supervisor took a position of cover and requested more patrol units to respond. The
decedent assumed a kneeling posture on the ground. The patrol supervisor spoke to the decedent for several
minutes in an attempt to get the decedent to put down the firearm and surrender. More officers then began to
arrive. At various times during the encounter the decedent pointed the firearm at himself. Suddenly, the
decedent stood and pointed the firearm outwards in the direction of officers on the scene, and two officers
engaged the decedent with gunfire, striking him. The decedent fell to the ground. Officers approached the

decedent, secured him, and began administering first aid while awaiting for EMS to respond. Once EMS
arrived, the decedent was transported to the hospital. The decedent was pronounced deceased at 3:27am.
