Under Restraint: No Summary of Incident Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters) Summary: The Houston Police Department (HPD) received and responded to a "Suicide-in-Progress" call on June 1, 2023 at the Derek Hotel located at 2525 W. Loop S. 77027. Upon arrival at approximately 7:22 pm, uniformed patrol officers were informed by the suspect's ex-girlfriend that the suspect was in his hotel room with a firearm and made comments to her that he wanted to commit suicide. Specialized units certified to deal with mental health situations and crisis know as Crisis Intervention Response Teams (CIRT) also responded to the scene at approximately 7:42 pm. CIRT units made contact and communication with the suspect until Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Hostage Negotiations Team (HNT) personnel arrived and took over communications and security from CIRT and the patrol officers. HNT and SWAT personnel arrived at approximately 9:45 pm and began providing scene security and assumed communications with the suspect. At approximately 12:01 am June 2, 2023, SWAT personnel heard a muffled gunshot come from the suspect's room. SWAT personnel then breached the door to the suspects room and attempted to locate the suspect. room and attempted to locate the suspect. SWAT personnel observed the suspect to still have signs of life. The Houston Fire Department (HFD) provided medical aid and transported the suspect to the nearest hospital. At approximately 12:44am, the suspect succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. No law enforcement officers discharged a firearm or any less than lethal devices were used during this incident. Custodial Death Report :: Page 7 of 7
