Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On Monday, September 19, 2016, Marvin Wallace Martin, III shot at a Houston Police Department Patrol
Officer several times with a pistol during a vehicle pusuit before committing suicide in a moving vehicle in the
12900 blk of the Southwest Fwy in Stafford, Fort Bend County. Martin was a suspect in the shooting murder
of his girlfriend in the city of La Marque approximately 2 hours prior to this incident. No officer discharged a
firearm or made physical contact with Martin. A uniformed patrol officer in a marked police vehicle observed
Martin driving the wrong way on a one way street in the 2000 blk of Smith St in Downtown Houston at
approximately 3:15 am. The officer initiated a traffic stop that led to a vehicle pusuit. Martin entered the Gulf
Fwy south of Downtown where he held a pistol out of the driver’s side window and fired at least three
shots at the pursuing officer. Martin continued to evade and ended up travelling south bound on the
Southwest Fwy where the vehicle began to lose control before exiting the freeway and striking a telephone
pole in the 12900 blk of Southwest Fwy Service Rd outbound in Stafford, Fort Bend County ,TX at
approximately 3:30 am. Officers approached the vehicle and discovered Martin to have a self-inflicted
gunshot wound of the head. A 9mm Glock pistol was located near the body. Based on the position of the
body and actions of the vehicle prior to striking the telephone pole it is believed that Martin committed suicide
prior to the vehicle striking the pole. At the time of the incident, Martin was being investigated for the murder
of his girlfriend in La Marque, Texas. The murder happened approximately 2 hours prior to initiation of the
pursuit.
