Summary:
On 12-10-2021 at approximately 11:39am Bowie County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to 6588
FM 44e Simms, TX in reference to a disturbance involving a suicidal subject. Upon arrival, deputies were
advised that Mark Robert Peters w/m 12-18-1961 was inside of the residence and holding a firearm, irate and
suicidal. Deputies approached the residence and attempted to make contact with Peters by knocking on the
front door. Peters advised deputies to leave or he would shoot through the door. After warning deputies to

leave, he then fired a weapon through the door. Peters then remained barricaded in his residence for several
hours, only coming outside to threaten deputies and fire a weapon. Negotiations went on for an extended time
but were not successful. At approximately 3:40pm, Peters exited his residence carrying a handgun (that he
had previously been firing) and a shotgun. He walked across his front porch and then exited into his front
yard, walking towards the roadway (FM44e). Peters then turned in the direction of law enforcement that were
taking cover behind marked patrol cars that were parked in the yard, placing them in imminent danger. Given
his prior threats and willingness to shoot at law enforcement, a single shot was fired by law enforcement.
Peters was struck in the torso by the projectile. Medical attention was immediately provided with Peters being
driven by ambulance to Titus Regional Medical in Mt. Pleasant , TX. He was then air-lifted to UT Tyler
Hospital (Tyler, TX) where he remained in critical condition until 12-12-2021. On 12-12-2021 at approximately
1:19pm, we were notified by UT Tyler that Peters had expired. Arrangements were made for Peters to be
transported to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences at Dallas for autopsy. His Autopsy was
ordered by Smith County JP Deavers.
