Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On Tuesday August 11, 2020 at approximately 9:30 a.m., an inmate in the Brazos County Jail, Luther
Flowers, a 49 year old male from Bryan, Texas, passed away while receiving treatment at CHI St. Joseph’s
Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19. The patient was admitted to CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital on August
2nd and had been receiving treatment there since that date.
The patient was initially quarantined from the general population on July 30th when he reported that he was
not feeling well and was discovered to have fever. The patient was tested for COVID-19 on July 31st and his
results were received by medical staff on August 2nd indicating that he was positive. He continued to be
monitored and treated for his symptoms while awaiting test results. On the morning of August 2nd medical
staff and jail staff reported that his symptoms appeared to have become worse. Medical staff determined that
he needed a higher level of care and he was transported and admitted to CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital the
morning of August 2nd. The patient remained in the hospital receiving treatment from that date forward but
unfortunately did not recover.
The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an internal investigation into the incident, and the Texas
Rangers are conducting an independent investigation of the incident. Initially there are no indications or
manifestation of trauma. An autopsy has been ordered and will be conducted by the Travis County Medical
Examiner's Office in Austin, Texas.
