Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On May 8, 2025 at 10:52 a.m. the Castro County Sheriff's Office dispatch received a call from a property
owner located at 335 FM 1055 which is in northwestern Castro County, Texas about finding an expensive
off-road bike by his barn. He also told dispatch that he thought someone was in his barn. On the same date at
11:00 a.m. the property owner's wife called 911 stating that her husband had an intruder at gunpoint. A third
call was received by dispatch from a different caller that the male had been on their property and the husband
had gone after the individual. Calls were received by dispatch that the male was at the Frio Baptist Church
property. Deputy arrived on scene at 11:10 a.m. at the Frio Baptist Church property and was checking the
property when he observed the individual. The Deputy got out of his patrol unit and approached the male. He
had detained the male and had placed him against the wall of the parsonage, when the male tried to lower his
right hand. The Deputy kept trying to keep the individual from moving his hands. The male then started to
move away from the Deputy and retrieved a handgun from his person and shot the Deputy in the right
midsection of his body. The Deputy moved back and drew his duty handgun and started to defend himself.
The Deputy did strike the male three times. The Deputy was able to take the male into custody and
handcuffed him with his hands behind his back. The Deputy was able to kick away the two handguns that the
male had and used one or both. Sheriff arrived on scene and asked Deputy if he was okay, the Deputy said

no. The Sheriff asked the Deputy if he had been shot and he said yes. The Sheriff then told the Deputy to
check himself and the Deputy checked and the bullet resistant vest had stopped the bullet, but the Deputy
was still injured by the impact of the bullet. The male requested that he be sat up so that he could breath and
the Sheriff sat him up against a tree. Other units arrived which were the Deaf Smith County Sheriff's Office
and the Texas Highway Patrol. First aid was provided to the male. Castro County EMS and Hereford EMS
also arrived to provide medical to the Deputy and the male. The male was transported to Hereford Regional
Medical Center-Emergency Department (hospital) in Hereford, Deaf Smith County, Texas and the Deputy was
transported to Plains Memorial Hospital in Dimmitt, Castro County, Texas. The male succumbed to his
injuries at 1:11 p.m. in Hereford at the Hereford Regional Medical Center-Emergency Department.
