Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On 3/31/2026 at approximately 1600 Jail Staff were called to E-1 due to Inmate Lee Byrd falling out of bed.
Both officers spent time in the cell trying to assess Byrd’s condition. All Inmate Byrd would tell them is that he
didn’t feel good. The Jail Staff left E-1 as the situation did not appear to be an emergency. Jail Staff spoke
with the Facility Nurse advise them of the situation and to inquire if they were aware of any medical history
that could be a contributing factor to Inmate Byrd’s condition. Nurse advised that Byrd doesn’t take any
medication and his only medical problem that she was aware of was a bad hip. Jail Staff kept the camera in
E-1 up on his screen to maintain visual observation of Byrd.
Jail Staff went to E-1 at approximately 1625 to check on Inmate Byrd. Byrd again stated he didn’t feel good
but was not able to specify what was bothering him. Jail Staff returned to his desk and maintained
observation of Byrd through the camera.
At 1650 Jail Staff saw Inmate Byrd fall while trying to get off the toilet in E-1. Jail Staff responded immediately
to the cell. Inmate Byrd was sitting/lying on the floor next to the toilet. After talking to the officers for a few
minutes Inmate Byrd collapsed and lost consciousness at 1655. Jail Staff immediately called for EMS and
began administering first aid and CPR.
EMS arrived at 1710 and continued CPR. EMS continued with their life saving measures until approximately
1735 when they discontinued their efforts. C.I.D. and the Texas Rangers were contacted to begin their
investigation.
