Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On December 27, 2018, at approximately 12:15 am, Harris County Precinct One deputies responded to a
Burglary of a Habitation call in progress. Upon deputies approaching the driveway of the residence, they
observed a Maroon colored Jeep exiting the driveway. Deputies ordered the male suspect to stop and exit the
vehicle, but the suspect refused and fled the scene. Deputies pursued the vehicle and observed the suspect
stop and exit the vehicle. The suspect began running toward White Oak Bayou and deputies pursued the
suspect on foot. Deputies observed the suspect jump into the waters at White Oak Bayou. Due to the high
levels and strong currents of the water, the deputies did not feel it was safe to enter the waters to apprehend
the suspect. The suspect was observed in the middle of the bayou, bobbing in and out of the water. Deputies
requested the suspect to swim to the embankment on several occasions, but the suspect refused. The
suspect appeared to struggling and was gasping for air each time his head broke the surface. Deputies
observed the suspect go under the water and did not resurface.
On January 2, 2019, Harris County Precinct One deputies aided in the search of the missing suspect who fled
from the deputies on December 27, 2018. At approximately 10:00 am, deputies discovered a human body
floating in White Oak Bayou. The body was later identified by the Medical Examiner's office as Kevin Smith,
DOB 06/24/1991.
