Officers observed the suspect's vehicle fail to indicate a turn as it turned onto the northbound feeder on the Gulf freeway. Officers were in marked HPD vehicles; therefore, they initiated a traffic stop on the decedent's vehicle using their emergency equipment. The decedent fled from the Officers. Officers pursued the decedent for several miles with emergency equipment activated. The decedent's vehicle crashed into a citizen's vehicle in the 8400 block of Winkler and then continued evading arrest from officers in his vehicle. The decedent then crashed into an 18-wheeler in the 3200 block of the Eastex freeway, at which time the decedent's vehicle became disabled. Officers stopped, positioned their mark patrol vehicles behind the decedent's vehicle, and took cover while drawing their weapons. A short time later, Officers heard what they believe to be a gunshot from inside the vehicle. Officers approached the decedent's vehicle and found him to be deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. The Houston Fire Department was called to the scene. Once arrived, Kevin Jones was declared deceased by Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7 --- PAGE BREAK --- HFD at 1611 hours. A pistol was found in the decedent's right hand and a fired cartridge casing was found in the vehicle. A post-mortem examination was completed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science and a preliminary finding indicated a suicide by firearm. Custodial Death Report :: Page 7 of 7
