Summary:
On Thursday, November 22, 2018 at approximately 6:55 p.m., Officer M. C. Childress, Officer C. Pocasangre,
and Officer J. L. Brennan, all assigned to the Patrol Region 3 Command, Westside, were dispatched to a "
Criminal Mischief In-Progress" at the Whataburger restaurant located at 9517 Bissonet Street.
Employees of the business reported an older shite male entered the business, naked from the waist down,
and began destroying the inside of the restaurant. The erractic suspect, later identified as Kent Griffin,
assaulted a Whataburger employee before fleeing the restaurant on foot.
Responding patrol officers eventually located Mr. Griffin in the parking lot of the Westwood Mall located at
9570 Southwest Freeway. Mr. Griffin was now completely naked and non-compliant with Officers' verbal
commands to surrender. After pleading with him to cooperate, Mr. Griffin fled on foot, but was quickly
captured in the parking lot by officers. While being handcuffed, Mr. Griffin continued to physically struggle and
resist arrest.
After being taken into custody and escorted toward a patrol vehicle, Mr. Griffin was again uncooperative and
stumbled to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement. He continued to struggle and then became
unresponsive, so he was transported by Houston Fire Department personnel to Southwest Memorial Hospital,
wherein he was pronounced deceased by doctors at 7:37 p.m.
The medical examiner's preliminary toxicology test revealed Mr. Griffin was under the influence of
methamphetamines and amphetamines at the time of this incident.
