The jailer used force to subdue and handcuff her resulting in a black eye when the jailer took her to the ground. Page was transported to the hospital and cleared medically. Page was transported back to the jail and put in segregation cell #4. On 10/08/2017 at approximately 7:30 AM, Page began screaming and banging on her cell with a hairbrush and her hand. Two Coryell Jailers attempted to calm her giving her several orders to stop, but Page refused and continued to strike the door with her hand and brush. Page was ordered to submit to hand restraints so that she could be placed in the restraint chair until she calmed down. This was to be done to prevent injury to her person but Page refused all orders given to her by jail staff. Due to the previous use of force incident they attempted to gain compliance by spraying OC pepper spray through the food slot of the cell door. This was ineffective because Page had moved to the back of the cell and was facing the wall. The jailers then entered the cell and approached. Page still had the hairbrush in her hand. The supervisor on scene ordered Page to comply with the application of hand restraints and page refused again. At this time, the supervisor deployed two more short bursts of OC pepper spray. Page raised the brush and the supervisor took her to the ground. During the struggle, Page gained possession of the jailer’s handcuffs and rolled on top of them clinching them underneath her. The jailers attempted to pull her arms out to cuff her. When this failed one of the jailers applied two distraction knee strikes to her right leg and side. The same jailer then struck her in the head with a closed fist. Throughout the struggle the jailer struck Page about the face only after being bitten on the hand. He struck her once or twice after that because she was trying to bite his groin area as he straddled her trying to gain control. The other jailer and video corroborated their statements. The jailers eventually handcuffed Page behind her back. The jailers turned Page onto her left side. At this time, the jailers noticed Page wasn’t moving or breathing. The jailers called for EMS and started CPR until being relieved by responding Deputies. EMS responded and continued lifesaving measures to no avail for approximately 30 minutes. EMS personnel were ordered by the doctor to cease life saving efforts. The cell was secured sealed and initialed with crime tape and a Deputy was assigned to guard the scene until the Justice of the Peace could be called and the scene could be investigated and processed. Once the Justice of the Peace pronounced time of death and the scene had been completely processed and photographed, page was sent to Southwestern Institute Of Forensic Sciences At Dallas for an autopsy. Autopsy report revealed cause of death as mechanical asphyxia in association with physical restraint and manner of death as homicide. Custodial Death Report :: Page 7 of 7
