Once the Officer arrived at the location, he observed a vehicle on the side of the road (2900 block of N. Shary Rd.) having possible mechanical problems since it had its emergency hazard lights on. The officer proceeded to check on a female that was standing outside by the vehicle. The female was identified as Karina Peralez (DOB 09/28/1987), a warrant check was conducted on said female and the officer was advised that she had outstanding municipal warrants totaling $917.47. The female was placed under arrest and taken to the Mission city jail. As the female was being transported to the city jail, the officer noticed that she was moving alot in the rear seat, as if to be attempting to conceal something. Once at the city jail, the officer requested that a female officer come to the jail on order to conduct a search of the female. Once the search was done, the female had concealed several Xanax pills in her shoe and a clear plastic baggie of what appeared to be methamphetamine was also located concealed on her body. Said female was being uncooperative throughout the search and refused to put on her leggings so she was left without clothing from her waist down. After leaving her in the jail cell alone, the jailers went to check on her approximately 15-20 minutes later and found her with her leggings wrapped around her neck. The jailers entered the jail cell, removed the leggings from her neck and began to administer chest compressions. An ambulance was sent to the jail area and the female was transported to Mission Hospital. The female was declared brain dead and the family made the decision to have her disconnected from life support. Female was pronounced deceased at 9:40AM on 02/07/2024.
