Deaf Smith SO Deputies located a vehicle Mr. Mendoza was known to drive at 212 6th Ave. Surveillance was
begun at that location. Contact with other family members confirmed Mr. Mendoza was at the location. Efforts
were made to arrest Mr. Mendoza away from the house. Those efforts were unsuccessful. A surround and
call out was planned. As Officers set up the perimeter, the suspect exited the back and was challenged by
officers. Mr. Mendoza then ran toward the front. He was displaying a weapon. Officers in front challenged Mr.
Mendoza; however, he would not submit to arrest. An Officer fearing that he was about to fire on other
officers on scene fired his rifle at Mr. Mendoza striking him. The suspect continued to climb a pipe and wire
fence and fell to his back on the opposite side. The fall dislodged the gun from his hand. Mr. Mendoza looked
around and found the gun and picked it up. Officers observed the gun now pointed in their direction. Two
