Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On October 21, 2025, at approximately 5:00 AM, Sergeant Jesse Grissom was contacted by Lieutenant
Bradley Richards regarding an SRT callout. The suspect, JoMarr Davis, was wanted for murder and had
barricaded himself inside a vehicle while armed with a pistol. Dispatch further advised that Davis had
threatened to commit “suicide by cop.”
Sergeant Grissom notified SRT members to respond with the armored vehicle and less-lethal options.
Investigator Justin Hudnall arrived at the location ahead of the team to establish a sniper position and begin
surveillance on the suspect’s vehicle. Additional team members—Corporal Jaden Huse, Deputy Robert
Rocha, and Investigator Rudy Hernandez—arrived shortly thereafter. All team members were wearing issued
SRT uniforms and were armed with department-issued pistols and rifles.
The suspect was seated in a small white Toyota four-door sedan parked on the north end of a business’s
west parking lot, facing west. A Van Alstyne Police Department patrol unit was positioned behind the Toyota,
illuminating it with a spotlight. The SRT team and armored vehicle staged approximately 75 meters west of
the Toyota near Industrial Parkway at the north entrance to the property. Negotiators were actively
communicating with Davis by phone.
Lieutenant Richards remained in contact with the Collin County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, which was
preparing to respond for mutual aid. The SRT team formulated extraction and gas deployment plans. At
approximately 7:20 AM, Lieutenant Richards received updated information from negotiators and directed the
initiation of the SRT operation. The tactical plan involved using a patrol unit to block the rear of the Toyota
while the armored vehicle would approach from the front.
Lieutenant Richards positioned his patrol unit to the rear of the Toyota. The armored vehicle, operated by

Investigator Hernandez (driver) with Deputy Rocha (rear passenger), Corporal Huse (turret), and Sergeant
Grissom (front passenger), advanced toward the vehicle from the west across an open field. As the armored
vehicle closed to approximately 20 meters, Davis was observed in the driver’s seat. Suddenly, his body
moved in a manner consistent with having sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. At that time,
neither the armored vehicle nor the patrol unit had made contact with the Toyota. Investigator Hernandez
advised that Davis had shot himself.
Davis appeared to be taking shallow breaths but was otherwise unresponsive. Lieutenant Richards
approached the rear passenger door with a ballistic shield, visually clearing the back seat before finding the
door locked. He then moved to the driver’s side door, where Sergeant Grissom joined him. Lieutenant
Richards secured Davis’s right arm while Sergeant Grissom observed an apparent gunshot wound to the right
side of Davis’s head, consistent with a self-inflicted injury. EMS was immediately requested.
Attempts to remove Davis from the vehicle were initially unsuccessful, as his limbs were rigid and his legs
were wedged under the dashboard. Sergeant Grissom set down his rifle, folded Davis’s legs at the knees,
and, with Lieutenant Richards, pulled him from the vehicle.
Once outside, Davis was placed on the ground and handcuffed. Investigator Hernandez began chest
compressions, continuing until EMS personnel took over. During this time, Sergeant Grissom observed a
piece of paper fall from the vehicle that appeared to be a suicide note; it was placed back on the vehicle’s
dashboard for evidence preservation. After Davis was loaded into the ambulance, EMS personnel requested
removal of the handcuffs.
Mr. Davis was later pronounced deceased at the hospital at 8:41 AM. The Texas Rangers were notified and
subsequently assumed responsibility for the death investigation.
