Decedent Jeremy Smith, refused to stop, leading to a vehicle pursuit. An HPD Gang Unit officer attempted to
block Smith’s path with their vehicle, but Smith struck the vehicle while the officer was still inside in an attempt
to escape.
Officers stopped the vehicle and detained Decedent Smith and his passenger at 2:12pm. The Harris County
District Attorney’s Office accepted charges on both occupants. The decedent was charged with Evading in a
Motor Vehicle and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, while the passenger, now co-defendant, was
charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance – Penalty Group 1.
Both individuals were transported to the Harris County Joint Processing Center (JPC) separately, arriving at
approximately 4:14 pm. During booking, the decedent began showing signs of a medical emergency around
4:58pm. The booking HPD officer and an HCSO detention officer escorted him to medical. While seated at
medical, Decedent Smith was asked what was wrong and he stated, “Too much liquor”. At 5:02 pm, he
suffered a seizure and was placed on the floor in the recovery position.
The Houston Fire Department (HFD) was immediately contacted. While awaiting their arrival, the
co-defendant informed those involved that Decedent Smith has ingested cocaine. After being advised of the
possible ingestion, Narcan was administered. Medical staff continued treatment until HFD arrived and
assumed care. HFD personnel placed him on a stretcher and transported him to a local hospital, where he
was pronounced deceased at 6:18 pm.
Preliminary information received from the Harris County institute of Forensic Sciences Medical Examiner
indicates that the decedent’s urinalysis was positive for cocaine and THC. Full toxicology and autopsy results
are pending.
