It was reported that a male, later identified as Jeremy Bennett, a 36-year-old male, was brandishing a handgun and threatening two females inside a home. The suspect fled the original crime scene but was located in a separate nearby residence. Officers set a perimeter around the residence and summoned SWAT and the Crisis Negotiations Team to assist. It was discovered that Bennett had an active, unrelated warrant for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Once the SWAT team arrived on the scene, crisis negotiators contacted Bennett and negotiated off and on for several hours in an attempt to take him into custody peacefully. A warrant was sought for the residence that Bennett was barricaded in. The SWAT team deployed gas into the residence numerous times. Bennett ultimately exited the residence, still brandishing the handgun. Officers commanded Bennett to discard the weapon multiple times, then deployed a less lethal impact Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7 --- PAGE BREAK --- weapon, which was ineffective. Bennett then raised the firearm in a threatening manner and pointed it in the direction of officers. Officers simultaneously discharged their firearms, striking Bennett. Abilene Fire Department medics were already on scene and rendered medical aid, but Bennett ultimately succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Custodial Death Report :: Page 7 of 7
