Summary:
On Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 9:30 P.M., the Harris County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to 2147 Brinton
Oaks Court, in northwest Harris County in reference to a male with a gun threatening to kill himself. The
deputies arrived at the location and did not locate the male, who was identified as James Cartwright. Back-up
deputies located Mr. Cartwright near a neighborhood park and approached him. The deputies attempted to
conduct a Terry Search for weapons and Mr. Cartwright refused and started walking away and refused orders
to stop. A deputy deployed a Taser in attempt to gain control. Mr. Cartwright pulled out a handgun and fired a
single shot to his head, falling to the ground. Mr. Cartwright was transported to a local hospital where he was
pronounced deceased by the doctor at 10:35 P.M. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will
perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary ruling was a gunshot wound to the
head by suicide.
