Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7
--- PAGE BREAK ---
On December 4, 2018, a Belton Detective, was assigned case number 18003400 for further investigation.
The report was concerning an aggravated assault where the suspect used and exhibited a deadly weapon, a
handgun, during the commission of the assault (PC Sec. 22.02 Aggravated Assault) and assault involving a
family member where the suspect was impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of person by
applying pressure to the person's throat or neck (PC Sec. 22.01 (b)(2)(B)Assault).
At about 1145 AM, on December 4, 2018, a Belton Officer observed the suspect, Jacob Cadena, from the
above assault walking near the Belton Police Department at 711 E. 2nd Avenue. The Detective advised
Officers that he would like to speak to Cadena in reference the Aggravated Assault and to be careful because
Cadena was reported to be armed.
At about 1150 AM, Officers attempted to make contact with Cadena as he walked on the sidewalk on the
north side of the police department near 2nd Ave. The officers advised Cadena they wished to just speak with
him and he continued to walk away from them. An unmarked police vehicle occupied by four Belton
Detectives pulled past where Cadena was walking and stopped in the 500 block of E. 2nd Ave at about the
same time Cadena began walking across 2nd Ave. towards the northside of the roadway. It was during this
time that Cadena began reaching into his waistband. Officers gave orders to him to stop reaching into his
waistband and several displayed their duty firearms. Cadena produced a handgun at the same time a Belton
Detective grabbed him from behind in a "bear hug" manner. Cadena then shot himself in the head with the
handgun he was holding. The Detective's firearm was still holstered. No Belton officers discharged their
weapon. Cadena was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Incident was captured on Body Worn Cameras.
