Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On Friday February 3, 2023, a deputy was working an extra job at the Home Depot in the 10,600 block of the
Eastex Fwy. While on location the deputy was notified by loss prevention personnel of an individual known to
them from previous thefts. This individual proceeded to load his shopping cart with over 600 dollars’ worth of
merchandise, passed all points of sale and attempted to exit the store when he was stopped and escorted to
the loss prevention office. Once in the office the theft was confirmed, and the deputy attempted to detain the
individual in handcuffs. At this point the individual pushed the deputy and attempted to evade on foot through

the store. The deputy gave chase and was able to detain him. Once detained this individual complained of
high blood pressure. EMS was called to the scene confirmed his high blood pressure and transported him to
a local hospital where he was admitted.
On Saturday February 4, 2023, a deputy went to the hospital to see if this individual was going to be released
so he could be arrested for an open felony theft warrant as well as the new charges from the previous day.
The deputy was told his blood pressure and heart rate were still high and he would not be released. The
deputy returned to his vehicle and was typing on his computer when he observed the individual run past his
vehicle. The deputy told this individual to stop but he continued to run across the street into the woods. A
perimeter was set up and with the assistance of K9 he was apprehended. Once apprehended in the woods
he was walked back to the patrol vehicle, where he showed signs of labored breathing. Due to the labored
breathing, he was taken across the street back to the hospital where he later passed away.
