Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On June 18th, 2017 at 2057 hours, Officers Dodson and Reyes were dispatched to a minor accident located
at 6015 Centralcrest St. They arrived at 2103 hours and noted there was a vehicle in the ditch and partially
blocking the street that had made contact with a fire hydrant. The driver was still in the vehicle and appeared
to be asleep and had the seatbelt around him.
Officers made contact with the driver and he responded, and provide his information. He was identified as
Gwinn Naderhoff III, date of birth 09/23/1951. The officers started to assist him in exiting the vehicle but he
was able to get himself out of the vehicle. Upon viewing Mr. Naderhoff exit the vehicle, the observed he has
great difficulty in standing unassisted. He leaned on his vehicle for support and to keep standing. Whenever
he wasn't allowed to lean on an object he had to be helped to avoid falling down. His eyes were bloodshot
and dilated. He was sweating profusely and had difficulty speaking in a coherent manner.
While the officers were speaking with him at the vehicle, and the door closed and he attempted to move out of
the way but his hand was caught and closed on his right middle finger, the officers opened the door and
contacted HFD to treat his injuries.
Officers attempted to conduct a standard field sobriety test (SFST) for the HGN but Mr. Naderhoff was unable
to follow the directions provided. He couldn't track smoothly and his pupil were dilated; he had bloodshot eyes
and would squint his eyes, move his head, and close his eyes while attempting the HGN test. Mr. Naderhoff
balance was compromised to the point that continuing the SFST could lead to possible injury and officers
terminated additional test. Mr. Naderhoff exhibited swaying and stumbled on multiple occasions throughout
the time on scene.
HFD Engine 50 and Ambulance 38 arrived, the determined that Mr. Naderhoff would need stiches for his
finger and he would be transported to Greater Heights Memorial at 610/Ella. Officers followed the ambulance
to hospital, while Officer Dodson and Reyes went to the District Attorney office to file charges of DWI.
