Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
At approximately 12:30 am on Thursday, July 28, 2016, a two-man marked DWI Task Force unit, observed a
tan Ford Crown Victoria commit several DWI related moving traffic violations in the 17000 blk of the Gulf Fwy
Service Road. They initiated a traffic stop, and one officer approached the suspect on the driver’s side
while the other officer approached the passenger side of the vehicle. The officer on the driver's side asked the
suspect for his license several times, and the suspect responded that he was not supposed to be driving. As
this officer briefly conversed with the suspect, The officer on the passenger side observed a pistol next to the
suspect’s right leg. The officer informed his partner of the gun, and the suspect revved the vehicle, put
it in gear, and drove away at a high rate of speed. The officers ran back to their patrol vehicle in an attempt to
pursue the suspect, observing the tail lights of his vehicle far in the distance. Both officers briefly lost sight of
the suspect’s vehicle, and as they approached the 13800 blk of the Gulf Fwy Service Road, the
officers noticed that the vehicle had crashed and was facing sideways along the on ramp to the Gulf Fwy
main lanes. A felony stop was initiated; however, the suspect did not respond to commands. Once back up
arrived, the officers approached the vehicle and observed the suspect dead from a single gunshot wound of
the head. A semi-automatic .380 pistol rested in his lap. The officers did not witness the suicide or hear the
gunshot. The suspect was identified as 37 year old Gary Leonard Blalock, Jr. Blalock has a lengthy criminal
history with three prior convictions for DWI. His third DWI resulted in a felony conviction and ten years of
