Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On April 19, 2017, at approximately 2048 hours, an officer arrived at Holding Cell #6 to transfer Inmate
Gabriel Murrieta to a housing unit. Inmate Murrieta informed the officer that he could not walk. The officer
then left the cell and returned with another officer and a wheelchair. The officers assisted Inmate Murrieta into
the wheelchair and escorted him to the Intake Medical Area. A nurse examined Inmate Murrieta and
discovered that his body temperature was low. The nurse then contacted the Jail Physician who informed her
to give the inmate a blanket and monitor his body temperature. Inmate Murrieta was then issued a blanket
and was placed in a wheelchair on the Booking Floor in close proximity to the nurse's station. At
approximately 2204 hours, the nurse along with two officers checked on Inmate Murrieta. At approximately
2220 hours, an incident occurred elsewhere in the jail and Inmate Murrieta was secured in a holding cell for
the duration of that incident. At approximately 2315 hours, an officer retrieved Inmate Murrieta from the
holding cell and returned him to the Intake Medical Area for evaluation. At approximately 2327 hours, the
nurse examined Inmate Murrieta and was unable to find a pulse. Inmate Murrieta was placed on the floor, and
three nurses along with the use of an AED began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. The Emergency Medical
Services was immediately contacted and arrived at the facility at approximately 2337 hours and began
administering aid. The Emergency Medical Services departed the facility with Inmate Murrieta at
approximately 2345 hours. At approximately 0014 hours on April 20, 2017, Inmate Murrieta was pronounced
deceased by Christus Spohn Shoreline Emergency Room staff.
