Fire Department (HFD) Ambulance 6 (A6). HFD told the officer the male advised he had smoked
phencyclidine (PCP).
HFD escorted the male to a stretcher, and the officer requested two more officers to assist HFD with
transporting the male. While in the back of the ambulance, HFD started and IV on the male, who tensed up
and became violent and began swinging his arms and kicking his legs toward HFD personnel in a combative
manner, striking them several times for an extended period. HFD personnel attempted to gain control of the
male but were initially unable to. One of the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) became pinned in a
corner by the male who was holding him against this will. To get the male to let him go, he struck the male in
the torso approximately tow times with his hand to break contact and protect himself from further assault
while simultaneously moving out of the way.
After several minutes, officers gained control of the male and were able to restrain his arms. Officers then
handcuffed the male's arms to the stretcher and placed them in leg restraints to prevent further combative
actions from his unpredictable behavior. Two officers and HFD personnel remained in the back of the
ambulance enroute to the hospital.
Upon arrival at the hospital, HFD personnel checked the male's pulse, found it faint, and began CPR. Officers
immediately removed all restraints, and hospital staff continued CPR until the attending physician called the
time of death at 1954 hours.
