The DEA advised a husband and wife tandem, Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson, were driving a Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer ("TTST") with contraband in the area of Clarendon Texas. DEA requested DPS locate the TTST and develop probable cause to stop it. DPS Troopers relayed this information to the Donley County Sheriff. The Donley County Sheriff located the TTST and Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7 --- PAGE BREAK --- observed a traffic violation. The Sheriff attempted to stop the TTST. The TTST began to evade law enforcement resulting in a pursuit. During the pursuit, Mr. Stevenson attempted to collide with law enforcement vehicles and civilian vehicles. Troopers deployed spikes, which deflated the TTST's front tires. The TTST continued to evade law enforcement. Law enforcement officers attempted to stop the TTST by firing into the motor and at the remaining tires. A short time later, the TTST stopped on IH-40. The TTST then reversed towards law enforcement vehicles. As the TTST neared law enforcement, Mrs. Stevenson, the front passenger, displayed a handgun and pointed it at law enforcement. Law enforcement officers from DPS, the Donley County Sheriff's Office, and Gray County Sheriff's Office, fearing for their lives, discharged their firearms in self-defense at the Stevensons. Both Stevensons were shot. Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the Stevensons. Mrs. Stevenson died at the scene and Mr. Stevenson later died at a hospital.
