Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On 03-31-2018 at 5:35am, inmates in 12A2 were allowed to exit their single cells and eat breakfast that was
being served in the common area day room. Inmate / witness Ira Beardman housed in #106 noticed that the
decedent had not come out of cell for breakfast. Inmate Beardman opened the decedent's cell #107 and
checked on the decedent. Inmate Beardman did not get a response from the decedent and alerted Officer
Nares immediately. Officer Nares arrived at cell #107 and observed the decedent on his bunk and lying on his
back with the covers pulled up to the decedent's neck. Decedent appeared that he was still sleeping. Nares
attempted to wake the decedent with no response. Ofc. Nares pulled back the covers and observed the
decedent was shirtless but still wearing pants. Ofc. Nares checked for a pulse from the decedent with
negative results. Ofc. Nares stated the decedent was still warm to the touch and extremities still lucid. Ofc.
Nares pushed his emergency stat button and began CPR on the decedent. Other jail staff plus jail nurse
arrived to activate the AED. EMS arrived on scene and continued life saving measures until the
pronouncement at 6:30am by Dr. Pickett. Texas Ranger Veronica Gideon #10392 was contacted as well as
TCSO Detective Paul Salo. I met with both investigators at the scene which was documented by a Crime
Specialist. I was provided preliminary decedent medical records by the on scene jail nurse. Full medical
records would not be available until 04-02-2018 by the medical director. Medical Examiner's Office responded
to the scene with a transport team. After an external examination there was no obvious trauma noted to the
decedent. Decedent was diagnosed with HIV and provided approved medication that was located and
collected by the ME's Office. Manner and Cause of death pending autopsy.
On 06-07-2018 I received the completed Medical Examiner report from the ME’s Office. Copy of the ME
report was placed in the case file.
