Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On November 18, 2023, at approximately 9:05 am, inmate Smith Daniel was found unresponsive next to his
bunk in B2D housing unit of the loop Jail facility. Smith had returned to his housing unit from his cleaning
detail as a working inmate inside the intake area. On camera, Smith can be seen walking around the cell and
watching tv in the hours leading up to his medical emergency. While sitting on his bunk in the very back of the
cell, Smith can be seen in the video at 8:06 am tipping over and falling under the bunk next to his. All the
inmates in the area around Smith appeared to be sleeping and didn't hear or react to him falling to the floor.
After Cpl. Jefferson entered the cell and found Smith on the ground, he called for a medical emergency via
radio. Additional staff and medical personnel arrived and life saving measures were started. A short time later
EMS arrive and took over life saving measure but was unable to gain a pulse on Smith. Justice of the Peace
Theodore Duffield was notified and pronounced Smith's time of death at 9:47 am.
Pending autopsy results
