Under Restraint: No Summary of Incident Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters) Summary: On Thursday 06/19/2025 at approximately 0126 hours while on uniformed patrol I was dispatched to 16310 Deerhaven Run, Rosharon, TX, 77583 in reference to an Impending Disturbance. I was informed by dispatch that the complainant`s ex-boyfriend had text her stating that he was going to arrive at her residence. The complainant later identified as Brenda Pena DOB: 07/28/2002 stated that her ex-boyfriend later identified as Daniel Areh DOB: 07/24/1997 was driving a gray in color Toyota four door car of an unknown model. My Motorola Camera system was activated upon arrival. Upon arrival I made contact with Brenda. Brenda stated that Daniel had assaulted her in the past and was concerned that he would do the same if he showed up. Brenda stated that Daniel did not make any threats and that he only stated that he was going to come over. I ran Daniel`s information through TCIC/NCIC observing him to have a warrant out Harris County for Assault Causing Bodily Injury and a warrant out of Brazoria County for Assault by Threat Family Violence. I observed Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7 --- PAGE BREAK --- there to be no active Emergency Protective Order currently in place. I then informed Brenda to call law enforcement if Daniel arrived at her residence and set up a Close Patrol due to her concerns. While leaving the location and at the 2700 Block of FM 1462 traveling East I observed there to be a gray in color Toyota passenger vehicle bearing TXLP#PCT0513 to pass me traveling West. I observed the vehicle to have a defective headlamp also. Due to the traffic violation and the reasonable suspicion I turned around to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. While attempting to catch up to the vehicle I observed the vehicle to turn down Brenda`s street. I then after catching up to the vehicle activated my emergency lights on my marked patrol unit. The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed going to the dead end of Deerhaven Run and turned around. I then turned around with my emergency lights and sirens activated pursuing the vehicle to FM 1462. The vehicle then began to flee East on FM 1462 turning off the lights to his vehicle. I continued pursuing the vehicle to SH 288 where he turned North. While turning North the vehicle momentarily lost control damaging it. I continued North on SH 288 where he ultimately lost his passenger side front tire. The vehicle then went across the grass divider of SH 288 just South of CR 60 going into on coming traffic. I followed the vehicle continuing with the flow of traffic on the opposite side of SH 288. I then observed the vehicle to cross another grass divider and to go into a ditch at SH 288 and CR 572A. I then crossed the grass divider stopping near the vehicle and observing the driver door to be opened. I could see and hear the foliage moving, but was unable to see the subject due to the thickness. I gave commands to stop which were ignored. Deputy Vincent unit #5568 who was also on location then began to set up a perimeter. While holding perimeter at SH 288 and CR 572A Deputy Mezzino unit #3522 and Deputy Heckethorn unit #3523 and Officers Mitchell and Cleere with Alvin drone team arrived on location to assist. Officers Mitchell and Cleere observed a subject laying prone on the ground with the drone approximately 50 yards away from the abandoned vehicle in a heavily wooded area. Deputy Mezzino, Heckethorn, and Vincent went in the wooded area with K-9 Apache in an attempt to apprehend the subject. I along with Deputy Martinez/Otto unit # 6502, Sgt. Harris unit # 5513, and Deputy Morgan unit #5535 continued to hold perimeter. Iowa Colony PD Sgt Lambert assisted in holding perimeter. While I was holding perimeter Deputy Mezzino, Deputy Heckethorn, and Deputy Vincent approached the subject. Upon approaching I observed the sound of gunfire to be coming from the wooded area. I continued to hold perimeter unaware of the circumstances and to avoid crossfire. I was then informed by radio that the subject had been hit and that additional units requested in the wooded area to assist in medical care. I then went into the wooded area assisting in bringing Daniel out of the wooded area and to an awaiting ambulance. I observed Daniel to have multiple gunshot wounds and to have shallow breathing. I then set up crime scene tape and began a crime scene log securing the scene. Medic 2 with Memorial Hermann lifeflight arrived on location taking Daniel to Memorial Hermann Downtown with CPR in progress. The scene was then turned over to Investigations along with the vehicle which was still on location upon my departure. Iowa Colony provided Case #25-00410. Alvin PD provided Case # 01538.
