Under Restraint: No Summary of Incident Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters) Summary: Inmate Clovis Walton Gurley w/m 8-17-1970 was brought to our jail on an outstanding warrant for Probation Violation-Attempt to Commit Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was booked into the Bowie County Jail on 12-09-2025 @ 9:51am. Gurley was later housed in K-Pod, a multi cell pod with a shared day room. Gurley was found unresponsive at 2:41pm and was attended to by jail and medical staff. He was breathing and still able to move extremities at 2:44pm. CPR was started at 2:48pm and LifeNet ambulance service arrived at 2:55pm. Life saving efforts were continued until 3:29pm but were unsuccsessul. JP NancyTalley responded and ordered the autopsy of Gurley. We notified Texas Ranger Joshua Mason to conduct the investigation as required by statute. He responded and processed the scene with our assistance. There were no indications of foul play. Video footage was reviewed that showed inmate Gurley in the day room of K-Pod within the jail. A jail check was done by a correctional officer at 2:33pm. At 2:37pm, Gurley is seen with his head down on the table before sitting up and swaying back and forth. He is then observed urinating on himself at 2:38pm before falling off the stool at 2:39pm. He appears to struggle with breathing until jail/medical staff arrive at 2:41pm. Jail video indicates that Gurley suffered a major medical event leading to his death. Additional Information-Per Medical examiner's report, Gurley's death was ruled accidental. The cause of death is "Cardiovascular disease to include atherosclerosis, hypertension, and bicuspid aortic valve, in conjunction with the toxic effects of methamphetamine".
