Officers arrived and observed a white male and out of caution initially attempted to make contact with the man using the squad car public address system, but he remained unresponsive. After repeated audible attempts to wake him were unsuccessful, a group of officers protected by a ballistic shield approached the vehicle they observed a handgun in the man's lap. As officers attempted to open the car door to secure the weapon, the man woke up. Officers instructed the man to put his hands up and exit the car, after initially complying, the man suddenly reached down, picked up and raised the gun. One officer then fired his weapon duty weapon, striking the man. Immediate medical action was taken by Fire Rescue and the man was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Officers later determined the gun to be a facsimile firearm. Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 6
