Summary of Incident
Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
While in the intake room, Inmate Bryan Jeffery Curtis began exhibiting signs of medical distress, including
excessive sweating and shaking. A Denison Police Officer requested that booking staff contact medical
personnel. Medical staff arrived and assessed the inmate's vital signs, which were within normal limits.
Due to the inmate's continued shaking and sweating, it was determined that he should be escorted to the
medical unit for an EKG, despite denying any chest pain. However, because of the inmate's persistent
movement and sweating, medical staff were unable to obtain an accurate reading.
Based on the circumstances, medical staff made the decision to transport the inmate to the nearest hospital,
Sherman Medical Center, for further evaluation. While officers were preparing for the transport, Inmate Curtis
suddenly slumped over in his wheelchair in the presence of several officers. Officers immediately called for
medical staff to return to the booking area and initiated a sternal rub while awaiting their arrival.
Medical staff arrived promptly, assessed the inmate, and began life-saving measures. The on-duty Sergeant
called for an ambulance at 2035 hours. Inmate Curtis was transported to Sherman Medical Center by
Sherman Fire Department at 2047 hours.
At approximately 2115 hours, Inmate Bryan Jeffery Curtis was pronounced deceased by hospital personnel.
An autopsy is pending.
