The officers spoke to the victim and learned the suspect, armed with a handgun, forced entry into the victim's apartment, and hit her with the handgun multiple times. The suspect took off before the officers' arrival. While still at the scene, the officers observed the suspect walking south of the apartment complex. The officers, dressed in full police uniform, announced themselves and commanded the suspect to stop. The Custodial Death Report :: Page 6 of 7 --- PAGE BREAK --- suspect took off running on foot in an attempt to evade the officers. The officers gave chase. During the foot pursuit, the suspect fell to the ground and grabbed what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband. The officers drew their duty weapons when the suspect continued running on foot again. An HPD Sergeant was responding to a separate but related call for service at a residence nearby. The Sergeant, who had not even spoken to the 911 caller, observed the suspect running towards him armed with the handgun with officers giving chase. The Sergeant, in full police uniform, unholstered his duty weapon, pointed the duty weapon at the suspect, and commanded the suspect to show him his hands. The suspect disregarded his commands and continued to approach the Sergeant with the handgun in his hand. Fearing for his safety, the Sergeant discharged his duty weapon at the suspect. The suspect was struck at least one time. The Houston Fire Department (HFD) was called to the scene and pronounced the suspect deceased at 0027 hours. No officers were injured during this incident. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences completed the autopsy and ruled the Manner of Death as Homicide and the Cause of Death as Gunshot wound of head (face).
