Summary of How the Death Occurred: (max. 30,000 characters)
Summary:
On Monday, June 20, 2022, Officers assigned to South Gessner Division were dispatched to the 7100 block
of Beechnut in regards to a person down call. Officers arrived and made contact with a white male by the
name of Arlen Bates, on the street asking for help. The suspect appeared to be under the influence of
narcotics. The responding officer completed a person's check on the male to find he was wanted on a Felony
Warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance--with intent to Deliver. The Houston Fire Department
transported the male to Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital located at 7600 Beechnut for medical
treatment. The responding officer followed the ambulance to maintain custody of the male. Upon contacting
the Harris County Warrants Division, the responding officer confirmed the felony warrant. While receiving
treatment at the hospital, Dr. Nguyen indicated the male was experiencing a heart attack. Doctors placed the
male in a medically induced coma while treating him. Officers remained at the hospital with the male and he
was Blind Booked into the JPC. Once the booking process was complete, care, custody, and control of the
suspect was released to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. On June 25, 2022, the suspect died at the
hospital. Autopsy results are pending to determine the cause of death.
